Last week, I attended the Licensing Expo, the world’s largest and most influential licensing event, bringing together leading brands, licensors, licensees, retailers, and licensing agents from around the globe. This annual event is a crucial platform for connecting with partners, understanding industry insights, and staying abreast of emerging trends.


Highlights from the Licensing Expo

One highlight of the event is the annual meeting of Licensing International, the leading trade organization for the global licensing industry. Licensing International serves as a vital resource and advocate for licensing professionals worldwide. During this year’s meeting, Maura Regan, the President of Licensing International, announced that global sales revenue generated by licensed merchandise and services grew to $340.8 billion in 2022, marking an 8.02% increase over the $315.5 billion generated in 2021. This consistent growth underscores the immense potential of the licensing industry and its critical role in brand expansion strategies.

Key Sectors Driving Licensing Growth


Licensing is at the heart of any effective growth strategy for brands. According to the 2023 Global Licensing Industry Study. The Entertainment/Characters sector remains the largest property type, generating $138.1 billion, which constitutes a 40.5% share of the market. Corporate Brands follow as the second largest sector with $87.6 billion (a 25.7% share), and Sports is the third largest licensed property type at $37.3 billion, representing an 11% share.


Middle East and Africa: A Thriving Market


Interestingly, the Middle East and Africa region exhibited strong growth, with an 8.6% increase above the market average in 2022, resulting in $5.5 billion in revenue. This robust growth was primarily driven by Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Egypt. These figures indicate a thriving potential for brand licensing in the Middle East.


Bridging the Knowledge Gap


Despite these impressive numbers, many brands, manufacturers, and retailers in the Middle East have yet to fully grasp the importance of licensing and do not incorporate it into their growth strategies. A significant number of business leaders are still unfamiliar with brand licensing and its benefits, such as co-branding or obtaining the license of a well-known brand to increase market share and shelf space.

On a monthly basis, I engage with numerous business leaders to discuss the potential for growing global brands and introducing them into the Middle East. My goal is to create win-win strategies that benefit both the brands and the regional markets. The Middle East is fertile ground for the licensing industry, with a growing interest in leveraging brand licensing for business growth.

During the Licensing Expo last week, I met with over 40 representatives of global brands, all eager to expand into the Middle East. This growth is being driven by significant investments in location-based entertainment, e-commerce, and retail, particularly in Saudi Arabia and the UAE. These countries are at the forefront of the region’s economic development, making them key players in the future of the licensing industry.
